We help blind and visually impaired individuals stay in their homes and out of institutions.

Just what is it like to volunteer as a driver for Sierra Services?

It is unlike any other volunteer experience that you might encounter. Some of the highlights are that you are going to meet some of the most interesting folks on our planet. Our clients are all types of people, with all kinds of interests – yet they have two things in common. All of them are visually impaired to some degree, and each client is very grateful for the rides our staff and volunteers provide. A driver can set the tone of the ride with conversation, and you really have an opportunity to elevate a person’s day with just a ride to the doctor or the dentist.

We try not to overtax our volunteers. We hope that if your schedule permits you can drive once or twice a month. We call usually with a specific client and ride in mind, but if you have other obligations, it is not a big deal. No special training is needed, although riding along on a “Shadow ride” might answer some of the questions that can arise. A good GPS  app on your phone can be helpful, as well. Most of the nuts and bolts of driving our clients can be covered in a short interview process at our offices. We can reimburse mileage if needed, and we pay 50 cents a mile for gas. If you have a heart to help other people and like to drive – I hope you’ll give us a call, (530) 265-2121. We can’t wait to meet you!
